Huskies, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Chow Chows, and their double-coated cousins wear one of nature's best-engineered garments: a dense insulating undercoat beneath a protective outer coat. Grooming a double coat isn't about cutting it shorter — it's about keeping both layers healthy and moving the dead undercoat out. Get it wrong and you damage the coat for years. Here's how to get it right.
The undercoat is soft, dense, and fluffy
The undercoat is soft, dense, and fluffy — insulation that traps air to regulate temperature in both winter and summer. The outer coat (guard hairs) is longer, coarser, and water-resistant — armor against sun, rain, and brush. They shed on different cycles and serve different purposes. This is why "just shave it, it's hot" is the worst advice in grooming: shaving removes the guard hairs that protect against sunburn and heat, while the undercoat — the actual source of the heat-trapping bulk — grows back first, thicker and more tangled than before. A shaved double coat often grows back patchy, dull, and prone to matting.

For healthy double coats, shaving is off the table. The exceptions are medical: surgery sites, severe matting that can't be humanely dematted, or a vet-directed shave for a skin condition. "It's summer in Memphis" is not a medical reason — the double coat insulates against heat, and shaved dogs overheat faster and sunburn. If your groomer suggests shaving a healthy Husky or Golden for convenience, find a different groomer. What double coats need instead is thorough undercoat removal: bath, high-velocity blow-out, and raking out the dead coat.

A proper double-coat groom is a process, not a haircut. It starts with a bath using a deshedding or clarifying shampoo that loosens dead undercoat. Then comes the high-velocity dryer — the single most important tool — which blasts loose undercoat out of the coat in clouds (this is deeply satisfying to watch). Then an undercoat rake and slicker brush work through what's left, section by section, down to the skin. The result is a dog that looks the same length but feels dramatically lighter, sheds far less at home, and whose skin can actually breathe. Double-coated breeds need brushing 2–3 times a week minimum, daily during coat-blowing season (spring and fall in the MidSouth). Use an undercoat rake for the deep work and a slicker for finishing — a bristle brush barely touches a double coat and gives a false sense of accomplishment. Brush in sections, parting the hair to see the skin; if you can't see skin, you're only brushing the top layer. Bathe every 4–8 weeks. And check behind the ears, in the armpits, and around the collar area — friction zones mat first.
In Memphis, double-coated dogs typically "blow coat" heavily in spring (March–May) and fall (September–November), with moderate shedding year-round thanks to our mild winters and indoor living. Book a deshedding appointment at the start of each blow season and a maintenance groom between. Waiting until the undercoat is impacted — packed tight against the skin — turns a routine appointment into a dematting session that costs more and stresses the dog. Regular beats rescue, every time.
