Clinical & Salon Overview
Poodles don't shed — they mat. That curly, dense, continuously growing coat is hypoallergenic and gorgeous, but it demands the most committed grooming routine of any breed on this list. The payoff is a dog that's always clean, always sharp, and welcome on every couch in Memphis. Here's how our groomers keep Poodles in show-ready shape at All About Pawz.
A Poodle's coat is hair, not fur: a single, curly, dense layer that grows continuously and barely sheds.
A Poodle's coat is hair, not fur: a single, curly, dense layer that grows continuously and barely sheds. Instead of dropping hair around your house, loose hair gets trapped in the curls — which is exactly why mats form so fast. Left unbrushed, a Poodle's coat felts into solid mats within weeks. The coat comes in every size package — Toy, Miniature, and Standard — but the texture and the rules are the same: brush constantly, clip regularly, never let it go.
Every other day at minimum, daily if the coat is kept long.
Every other day at minimum, daily if the coat is kept long. Use a slicker brush with a technique called line brushing: part the coat down to the skin and brush one thin section at a time, because Poodle mats start at the root where you can't see them. Follow every session with a steel comb — the groomer's golden rule is "if the comb doesn't glide, there's a mat." Focus on friction zones: behind the ears, under the collar, armpits, and where legs meet the body. A detangling spray makes the work gentler on the coat.
Every three to four weeks.
Every three to four weeks. A clean Poodle coat is dramatically easier to brush and clip, and dirty hair mats faster. Shampoo twice — the first wash lifts, the second cleans — and always follow with conditioner; Poodle hair drinks up moisture and conditioner prevents the dryness that leads to tangling. Rinse thoroughly and blow-dry while brushing with the slicker (fluff-drying), which straightens the curls and reveals the true length for an even clip. Never clip a dirty Poodle: grit dulls blades and the cut comes out choppy.
This is where Poodles shine.
This is where Poodles shine. Professional grooming every four to six weeks keeps the style crisp. Popular pet trims: the puppy cut (one even length all over, easy and cute), the teddy bear cut (slightly longer, rounded face), and the lamb cut (longer legs, shorter body). The traditional continental and modified continental clips — with their shaved face, feet, and pompons — are the breed's show heritage and still turn heads. Between grooms, keep the face, feet, and sanitary area tidy; a #10 blade on the face and feet is classic Poodle. Talk to your groomer about lifestyle: an active Standard doing dock diving wants a very different cut than a Toy lap dog.
Nails every two to three weeks
Nails every two to three weeks — Poodles' nails grow fast and clicking nails affect their precise, prancy gait. Ears need a conversation with your vet or groomer: Poodles grow hair inside the ear canal, and opinions differ on plucking versus trimming. We'll assess your dog's ears individually and go with what keeps them healthiest — never yank ear hair at home without guidance. Teeth: Poodles, especially Toys and Miniatures, are prone to dental disease. Daily brushing is ideal, dental chews help, and ask your vet about professional cleanings.

Poodles are a standing-appointment breed — book every four to six weeks and keep it.
Poodles are a standing-appointment breed — book every four to six weeks and keep it. If mats have formed tight to the skin, don't try to cut them out at home; it's dangerously easy to nick skin under a mat, and a pro can assess whether careful dematting or a humane trim-down is kinder. New Poodle puppies should meet their groomer early and often: short, happy visits build the lifetime of table manners this high-maintenance coat requires.
