The Classroom

This page covers the classroom at /learn/classroom: the layout of the room, how to learn with Professor, the states a learning day moves through, the order of a school day, and the messages you may see when the room cannot proceed.

The room

The classroom has three columns and a tool rail

  • Left: Professor, with a caption of what Professor is doing, Teach, Reframe, and transcript controls, and a box for your questions. Below that is your school-day agenda, with today's blocks, the current block marked, and a break button.
  • Center: the work surface: lesson tabs (Lesson, Quick check, Lesson overview), the check surface where you submit your reasoning, and a footer showing whether your work is saved.
  • Right: attention and inbox, recent submissions, quick notes, and what is next.
  • Bottom rail: Classroom, My courses, Companion, Assignments, Quizzes, Grades, Notebook, Resources, Calendar, Inbox, Files, and Meeting, plus a Co-host button for human support.

The header shows your identity, a course switcher, classroom search, a Professor voice toggle for read-aloud, and sign-out. Sign-out ends your session and returns you to /learn/sign-in.

Learning with Professor

Professor is the instructor in the room. You interact in four ways

  • Teach: ask Professor to teach one small next step from the current companion material. Professor keeps the step short and does not answer the active check for you.
  • Reframe: ask for the same idea through a different example, when the first explanation did not land.
  • Ask: send a free-form question.
  • Read aloud: hear lessons and Professor's responses read aloud.

You can open the transcript at any time to review the full conversation. When you submit an attempt, Professor reviews your reasoning against the companion material, which is the source Professor teaches from. See Assessments and Rubric.

Learning days and their states

Each school day moves through these states

  • Checked in: the day is open; you check in and begin.
  • Teaching: active instruction; you are working through lessons and checks.
  • Awaiting attempt: Professor is waiting for your response to a check or assignment.
  • On break: your place is saved and the room waits. A break applies across the whole school day; you cannot switch courses during a break.
  • Human handoff: you have raised your hand and a human co-host has your context. Professor steps back until you resume. See Raise Hand and Human Support.
  • Closed: the day is done, with a recap of what you covered, homework for independent practice, and a note of what comes next.

A day in the room

  1. Open the day. Select a course, or follow the agenda's current block. The room opens the day and checks you in.
  2. Learn. The Lesson tab shows the companion material for the current lesson: the idea, a worked example headed "In practice," and the source line for the material. The companion reader gives you the full text with previous and next navigation.
  3. Check. The quick check asks you to explain your thinking in writing. Submit it; Professor reviews your reasoning and responds. Attempts are recorded with a result and feedback; see Progress Tracking.
  4. Work. Assignments and quizzes come from the companion's practice sections and checks. Starting one makes it your active work; submitting it records an attempt. Submitting work is not itself a grade.
  5. Take a break. Breaks last fifteen minutes, with a timer on screen and everything saved. Use the break button whenever you need one.
  6. Close the day. Closing writes the recap, the homework, and what comes next. The next day starts fresh, with the previous day's record intact.

Messages you may see

  • "The classroom service is starting up. Please wait a moment and try again." The service returned a page instead of data. Wait briefly and retry.
  • "The classroom service returned an unreadable response. Please retry." Retry the action.
  • Break message. If you try to change courses during a break, the room tells you the break applies across the school day and asks you to resume after the timer ends.
  • Check message. You cannot advance past a check you have not completed. Complete the active check first.
  • Handoff message. While a co-host has your case, Professor does not take new instruction questions. Resume with Professor after the handoff ends.

Your writing in progress: an answer you are composing, a notebook note, a question: is saved automatically for each course. Close the tab mid-thought and your work is there when you return.
